They have a total population of roughly 140,000. They are usually known for their reindeer herding, which is unsurprising when you consider 10% of Sami people are involved in this, and in some regions the Sami are the only people legally allowed to herd reindeer. The Sami languages are mostly Uralic in nature, which is the same language group as Finnish and Hungarian. But many Sami also speak either Russian, Norwegian, or Swedish, depending on the country they live in.

Sami names have the same origins, and, since they are an old people, surnames were eventually adopted from their respective countries. A Sami in Sweden would likely have a Swedish surname, for example, but would not have had a surname before, and probably used a patronymic instead.
