The Bashkir people are a Turkic people primarily living in Bashkortostan, part of Russia around the Ural Mountains, with a population of roughly 1.5 million. Bashkortostan became the first ethnic autonomous region in Russia at the end of 1917. It has no sovereignty, but did have it around 1990 before quickly abandoned it later.

Being mostly Islamic, many Bashkir names are Islamic in origin as well. There are also some Persian and Turkic influences, which, for a Turkic people, is no surprise.
