Azerbaijan is a country that forms part of the border of southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia, and has a population of roughly 10 million people. They speak Azerbaijani, also known as Azeri. They share this language, as well as much of their culture, with Iranian Azerbaijan, which is a region in Northwestern Iran. The reason they are split is because of the Russo-Persian wars in the 19th century, which has also resulted in a change of naming conventions like they did in most, if not all countries conquered by the Russian Empire at that time.

The Azerbaijani people did not use surnames before the Russian Empire conquered them, but around the 1920s surnames became mandatory, and the Russian patronymic (-ov and -ev suffix for men, -ova and -eva for women) system was used. It also lead to the Russification of many Azerbaijani names, which can still be seen today in many surnames that are similar, but spelled slightly differently.
